The Grubb Family
Tucked away in a small country cabin just outside Collinsville, Texas is John and Shawn Grubb and their seven children.
They first began performing as a family in 2001 and have played for various festivals, churches, nursing homes and private parties in Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, including the Youth in Bluegrass Competition in Silver Dollar City, Missouri.
The girls first started picking out harmonies while singing hymns around the breakfast table with the family. Then a friend gave them a CD by Alison Krauss called "Now That I've Found You". They played it night and day (and still do!), singing to it while doing chores around the house until they knew them by heart. That began the family's journey into the world of bluegrass as well as keeping the hymns alive to tell the old, old story to a whole new generation. Their first gig was at the restaurant down the street when they filled in for a cancellation.
Influences to their music style came from Dad's extensive album collection (or as they're called these days-big black CDs!) of fine musicians such as John Denver, the Beatles, Cat Stevens, Buck Owens, Don Williams, Leo Kottke, Steve Fromholz, Michael Martin Murphy, Mark O'Conner, Vasser Clemments, John Hartford, Blake and Rice, Tim O'Brien, Lazarus, Trapezoid, CSNY, James Taylor, Merle Haggard, Michael Katakis, John Vandiver, Dan Fogelberg, Shake Russell, Michael Hedges, Joni Mitchell....well, you get the idea.
They've since added new CD's which include the Cox family, the Peasall Sisters, Dan Tyminski, Barry Bales, Ron Block, Jerry Douglas, Ralph Stanley, Rhonda Vincent, Tony Rice, Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Mike Marshall, Nickel Creek and Ricky Skaggs.
He met Mom when she came to audition for
his band back in 1985.
Christina ('86) manages band emails, bookings and CD sales. Occasionally, she will sing vocals and play the autoharp with the band. She enjoys reading classic novels, writing, studying herbs and natural medicine, cooking, babysitting, family, studying God's word, and encouraging young girls.
Melody ('89) plays fiddle and sings vocals. She enjoys reading classic adventures, writing novels, playing a round of Canasta, studying, babysitting, baking delicious desserts, playing classical piano, and learning CSS.
Faith ('92) sings and plays mandolin, piano and guitar. She also enjoys writing songs. Her pastimes also include studying God's Word, writing stories, horses, sewing for her Busy Hands Store, artwork for income, reading good books and editing His Wonders.
John ('93) plays lead and rythym guitar, an occasional mandolin and bass. He shoots him an occasional squirrel or bobcat with his brothers, tries on every instrument he can find, welds, plays chess or checkers with anyone, repairs just about anything and helps build our cabin.
James ('95) plays the bass. He enjoys a good joke, repairing bikes, hunting with his new gun, building our new home and making new contraptions from old parts.
Abigail ('98) sings and plays the mandolin. She likes to write songs and stories, cook, do dishes, braid and style hair and make doll clothes. She is also co-editor and writer for His Wonders magazine.
Joshi ('01) sings and plays the guitar. He likes to ride the neighbor's horse, set the table, do the trash, be Dad's 'gopher', play with cars in the dirt, pop wheelies for his mama and learn how to skin goats, rabbits and squirrels from his big brothers.
